The Cannabis Background Ep.4 : ปลูกกัญช่วยชาติ

เมื่อเกือบ 500 ปีที่แล้ว พระเจ้าเฮนรีที่ 8 แห่งอังกฤษ ประกาศกฎหมายบังคังให้เกษตรกรต้องปลูกกัญชง ในปี 1533 เพื่อส่งเสริมให้ประชาชนหันมาปลูกพืชกัญชงป้อนอุตสาหกรรมสิ่งทอที่กำลังได้รับความนิยมอย่างมาก โดยกำหนดให้ผู้ที่ครอบครองพื้นที่เพาะปลูกมากกว่า 150 ไร่ จะต้องแบ่งพื้นที่อย่างน้อย 1 ไร่ เพื่อเพาะปลูกกัญชง หากฝ่าฝืนจะโดนเงินค่าปรับที่สูงมาก (3 ชิลลิ่ง 4 เพนซ์) คิดเป็นรายได้ทั้งหมดเกือบครึ่งปีของชนชั้นกรรมาชีพ ต่อมาในปี 1563 พระราชินีนาถเอลิซาเบธประกาศเพิ่มข้อบังคับเพื่อเร่งการผลิตกัญชงให้มากยิ่งขึ้นไปอีก

กัญชงถือเป็นหนึ่งในเบื้องหลังความสำเร็จที่ยิ่งใหญ่ของจักรวรรดิอังกฤษ (British Empire) โดยเฉพาะการนำกัญชงไปผลิตผืนผ้าของใบเรือ เพื่อแล่นเรือหลวงเข้าไปเทียบท่ายึดแผ่นดินต่างๆทั่วโลก เช่น ออสเตรเลีย แคนาดา อินเดีย และฮ่องกง เป็นต้น นอกจากนี้ยังเป็นแหล่งซัพพลายขนาดใหญ่ที่โอบอุ้มอุตสาหกรรมสิ่งทอในยุคสมัยนั้นเนื่องจากผ้ากัญชงเป็นผ้าคุณภาพสูงที่แข็งแรงทนทานมีอายุการใช้งานที่ยาวนาน

In 1533 King Henry VIII made hemp cultivation the law of the land. For every 60 acres of land they owned, farmers had to set aside at least a quarter- acre of it to grow flax or hemp. If they didn’t they’d face a fine of three shillings and four pence (about half a year’s wage for a household servant) in order to provide the necessary fibre required by the nation as hemp industry became a very important industry to the British economy. However, in 1563 Queen Elizabeth I reintroduced the law to expand her navy and she added a £5 fine for any eligible landlord who failed to comply.

Furthermore hemp is regarded as one of the key factors in the British Empire’s enormous success, particularly its usage in the production of sail cloth. Sail royal ships into ports around the world to take mainland states such as Australia, Canada, India, and Hong Kong, among others. It was also a significant source of supply for the textile industry at the time, as hemp rope was a high-quality fabric that perfect for adding the finishing touch to traditional sailing boats with all the benefits of modern materials and manufacturing techniques.
