UK Ambassador urges ‘cannabis awareness’ during Phuket visit

2 min read

British Ambassador to Thailand Mark Gooding has urged Thai authorities to continue reminding tourists that cannabis remains strictly illegal in the United Kingdom, during a courtesy visit to Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat yesterday

The Ambassador highlighted the issue during a meeting at Phuket Provincial Hall, stressing the importance of informing the public – particularly travelers – about UK laws prohibiting the importation of cannabis, even in small amounts, said an official report of the meeting.

While medical cannabis is legal in the UK if prescribed by a specialist for certain health problems, cannabis remains illegal to possess, grow, distribute or sell in the UK. It is a Class B drug, with penalties for unlicensed dealing, unlicenced production and unlicenced trafficking of up to 14 years in prison, an unlimited fine, or both.
The discussion formed part of Ambassador Gooding’s official visit to Phuket, which began on Saturday (Apr 27). He was accompanied by his delegation and welcomed by local government officials and private sector representatives.

The meeting also addressed broader cooperation between the UK and Thailand, particularly in promoting sustainable tourism, supporting health tourism initiatives and improving tourist safety, the official report noted.

Ambassador Gooding also thanked Phuket for its care and hospitality toward British visitors and noted the significance of this year marking 170 years of diplomatic relations between the two nations. He concluded by expressing appreciation to Governor Sophon and local agencies, reaffirming the UK’s commitment to a strong and lasting partnership with Thailand, the official report said.
